Uni-go motor bike trailerWe spent around half an hour getting a few shots of Chris van Eekelen's Uni-Go trailer in the Auckland Domain. During that time he was approached by at least three interested passers-by paused or at least gave Chris's invention a cursory glance.

Chris had ridden all the was from Christchurch to find an Auckland distributor for the trailer. He was stopped on the motorway by a policeman who told him he was going too fast, but really wanted to have a close look at the trailer.

It all started when Chris decided, that very often, the touring sports motorcyclist sacrifices handing, stability, and performance, because of the amount of luggage that has to be carried, especially when riding two-up.

Uni-go motor bike trailerThe answer is the Uni-Go trailer. Chris says" The more weight you have on a bike, the higher the centre of gravity, which we all know plays a huge part in handling. Now if you tow a Uni-Go trailer behind your sports/touring bike, not only can you carry twice as much gear, but the centre of gravity will not have been affected. Therefore you can ride your bike in the way it has been designed to be ridden".

Chris has designed a sophisticated coupling which allows up and down, or sideways movement. A counteracting swing-arm eliminates any noticeable difference to the shock absorber when the trailer is full or empty.

Uni-go motor bike trailerThe trailer weighs 35kg, has storage capacity of approximately 140 litres, and a maximum load weight of 50kg. It is easily disconnected and remains upright when not in use.

Chris has tested the trailer aerodynamically at over 180kph. It has no discerning effect on cornering and braking, and negligible influence of performance. It is not recommended for bikes under 400cc (Uni-go trailers can now be fitted to just about any bike - editor, March 2000). The Uni-Go comes with the coupling, and a bracket easily fitted to the pack rack fixing points on your bike. The trailer can be provided with a colour scheme to match the livery on your bike.

Chris reckons that the average cost of a Uni-Go trailer will be around $2,000.
